Dec 2023 • Friends. We had visited the more touristy and crowded Szechenyi baths on Christmas day, and found the Veli Bej Baths to be cleaner, less crowded, and an overall better experience. Not to mention, it is far less expensive than the Szechenyi baths. We opted to rent bath and sauna towels, which were available.

Veli bej (Veli Bey, with "bey" meaning "chieftain" in Turkish) was built all the way back in 1574 during the Ottoman occupation of Hungary. Just like many other Turkish baths in the country, such as the ones in Eger or Pécs, Veli bej remained intact even after the Ottoman rule, and served as a place for treatment and pastime alike.
